I just did this repair. Same idea, but I found that a square faced punch and very light tap with hammer did same. Also, as per your comment, I also made a small bracket (tab) to keep the shaft and gear in place should either "walk" out again. Some pics here of an '85 1.9 WBX speedometer I repaired: https://picasaweb.google.com/musomuso/1985VanagonTransporterSpeedometerGuts One thing that i didn't get right on this speedometer was the main and trip odometer coordination; when trip odo white wheel hits 0 the main odo does not flip to next number. Simply zeroing the trip odometer (once speedometer installed) doesn't seem to do it. If one takes the numbers off the speedo, I'm not sure if one should zero the trip odo first, but there is a slot on the upper RH gear (or wheel? can't recall) that should somehow coordinate with the trip odo via the small black gear. I may take my older diesel speedo apart again and take some of what I mean. Neil. On Wed, Oct 2, 2013 at 12:05 PM, Stephen Grisanti <bike2vcu@yahoo.com> wrote: > 1) The little nylon gear .... I staked mine by using diagonal pliers to make little raised bite marks on the shaft that hold the gear in place.
