If you want to try fixing it yourself the odometer problem is usually one or both of two things: 1) The little nylon gear on the left/driver's side can lose contact with the worm gear that drives it. A little retaining tab can be installed to hold it in position. 2) The metal gear on the right/passenger side can start to spin on the metal shaft that it rides on. Some people use glue or Loctite to hold it in place but I staked mine by using diagonal pliers to make little raised bite marks on the shaft that hold the gear in place. It's been holding for thousands of miles now. This task is not difficult or time consuming but will make you wish for tiny hands. It is immensely satisfying to fix it yourself.
