Sounds like you got it much too hot if you are smelling burning.
5 minutes at one inch distance sounds like 10 times too much to me.

you can 'save' this though ( do test-pull on the wires ....and do
continuity check, since the junction has been kinda stressed I suggest ) ..
if they're good, get some Liquid Electrical Tape ..
it's brush-on vynyl in a can ..
works just great, comes in black or red.
I couldn't modify vanagon without this stuff, very useful it is.

the best butt connectectors I've found are marine ones, suppossed to be
waterproof..and have shrink ends.
