That is a very good point. Excessive oil level can also explain power loss as the oil eventually floods past the rings. The excessive heat and churning will also cause increased oil temperature with the resulting loss of oil pressure. Once the oil pushes past the rings consider catalyst and O2 sensor replacement.

Had you just added oil or just had the oil changed? If so my guess would be that the oil was overfilled and that played a role.

Check the oil when the van is perfectly level only. Check it several times, wiping the stick each time, until the measurement repeats the same indicated level. You really don't want it quite as high as the top mark on the stick, and never above that mark.
