Hose collapses and the pressure in the bottom end of the engine builds up and will try to get out the easiest way; dipstick then the crank seals are next in line. The OEM hose is not substantial and will collapses after years of use and the high heat in the engine compartment. Replace this hose with a braided, stiff multi-purpose hose from any auto parts supplier. > > > On 2013-10-08, at 12:00 AM, Automatic digest processor <LISTSERV@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> wrote: > >> Check the hose between the breather tower and intake to make sure it isn't >> kinked, collapsed or blocked. > > > Cheers, > > Frank Condelli > Almonte, Ontario, Canada > '87 VW Westy, '00 Kawasaki 250 Sherpa, "98 Ducati 750 Monster & Lionel Trains (Collection for sale) > Frank Condelli & Associates - Vanagon/Vanagon Westfalia Service in the Ottawa Valley > BusFusion a VW Camper camping event, Almonte, ON, > June 05 ~ 08, 2014 I'm experiencing the same thing. What i did was to inspect the rubber seal on the dipstick itself. All these yearsvof heat turned mine into a hard rubber piece and there was very little interference fit left. I wrapped a couple of revolutions of 3M 33+ tape around it and the problem ceased to exist. My Boston Bob motor is 12 years old now and well over 120k, so it's life is limited, but the blowout problem fornow has been fixed. Not sure if VW sells new dipsticks or sealing plugs for the stick or not.

YMMV
