My guess is that if the throttle body switch malfunctioned at idle, the ECU would tell injectors to stay open longer, (too rich) which should just flood the engine and cause a stall.

IIRC, the switch is closed at idle and WOT.

I would think the issue is somewhere at cable, linkage etc. Or, since engine was in/out maybe drivetrain shifted and pulled on the cable?
