I, too, think the Westy option is overpriced in some ways. I guess
some people are very much more comfortable with a "package" that has a big
following, a 'brand' that has wide-spread recognition, is well known and
has a lot of 'cachet' or cult appeal. I think, given the price that is
paid for "Westphalia" over plain old Vanagon, you could have a pretty
special camper van conversion done to any Vanagon and still come out with
either a less spendy Vanagon camper or a lot nicer Vanagon Camper with a
fully custom interior and all your own personal touches...
Yes, a spiffy Westie in pristine shape is pretty nice...but they are
formica and particle board with vinyl trim and pretty mundane finish...OK
as far as something you can get, ready made RV style, but given the going
prices, they should be really 'special' It should be exotic woods with
extra special hardware and yacht-like finish.....
Now, I shall hide for having cast doubts on the value of the Westie
optioned vanagon....especially as sold by 'restorers' ... sell to those
1%ers who don't even care about the price, they just want the Brand....
I think I could built a pretty nice Vanagon based camper for $80K....or
even $18k...but it wouldn't be a genuine Westie and people seem to need
that on the van..
