Are you sure on that gear reduction thing ? the only two vanagon gear reduction starters I know of are Bosch rebuilts for diesel vanagons .. and IMI aftermarket racing starters for waterboxers. whenever I have used one they crank like gangbusters. The last IMI I ran liked a fat shot of juice to trigger it .. like what the key supplies was not always enough to do the job.. but a starter boost relay .. or not wired heavy duty generic starter button ..no problem. yes....possibly something else besides the starter itself. I like starter booster relays actually .. they're standard fitment on any subaru engine conversion I do .....or for any IMI gear reduction starter, in my world.
