the shim-washers can also jam semi-sideways against the brass gear on the crankshaft.. then you have a real mess.

That shaft can even just lift up by turning the engine backwards. Keep a distributor in there at all times !

timing is no big deal .. should be checked when you first get the engine running. Often there's no need to even change the distributor position or timing.
