The Vanagon "syndrome" refers to a running condition where the engine , while running normally as you drive, either cuts out and stalls all at once, or cuts out intermittently almost as if the fuel supply was being shut off and on rapidly. The cause is due to a malfunctioning AFM . And it can occur on any vehicle running the Digifant, Digifant 1 or Digifant 2 fuel injection system. I had this problem over a month on a road trip to the east coast in 1997 . After I got home , I replaced the AFM(It took me til I got home and asked the Vanagon list why I was having this problem). I also added a capacitor fix harness it's called, and never had this problem again.
