but sounds to me like you need to fix those pipes properly.

....and there is a very effective replacement of those old plastic pipes....in the list archives....using rubber hose that is rated for this kind of use. I "think " Frank Condelli may have posted about that remedy ?

Quite a bit less expensive, but a very reliable fix IIRC.
