A very common attitude, the "herd-instinct"? I suppose this 'camp close' behavior, especially when the late comers bring along a generator, that might be reason to have a Syncro...Then you can climb up some dune or get clear back across an impassible clear-cut to attempt to preclude most other group-type campers from cozying up to you. One thing you can do is have an inconspicuous color on your vanagon, something that doesn't draw the eye as people pass by looking for a campsite..."Hey Honey, Lookie there, that guy's got a good spot. Let's go there!"

We've had half a dozen motorhomes get stuck in soft sand when trying to set up near us in the desert, They should have stuck to paths that were more suited to their weight, but they see us semi-removed from the firmer ground major paths and blunder ahead towards us..... till they sink... I guess that might be OUR fault...an 'attractive nuisance? ' We had some campers once drive up to our camp on a 2 mile long primitive beach in Baja...no one else anywhere around. The guy got out and tossed out a tent, then asked...."Hey, can I just tie this onto your tailgate?"...
