It's often confused with a bezel though. ;-) Vanagons have both (Vanagon content). Go Westy refers to these rather prosaically as a "finger plate for door release." I know this because I need one, mine has a hole worn through it.

I used "escutcheon" to describe old doorknob plates to my son recently when he remodeled his house and he thought I was joking. "Crazy grandpa making up words again!" Plinth blocks, fluted pilasters and window stools are a few of my other favorites that always get a laugh. Inside joke between us now.

When he and my daughter in law were mulling over fireplace trim designs last week I told them that "it would be beautiful with fluted pilasters on plinth blocks and crown molding under the mantle to match the window stools, and tile accents to match the door escutcheon plate design." I didn't know eyes could roll up so far.

Vanagons don't have these. (More content.)

I love the word escutcheon!

Great word!
