They don't always cost money.
I have on 85 Vanagon ..
purchased for $ 200 ..
guy even delivered it by tow truck, I didn't have to do a thing.

the good auto trans out if it went into my 84 Wolfsburg Westy to make it
all happy.
then I sold the old dead  core auto trans for $ 400.

I haven't ever done anything except run engines in I got for free ,
like left over from engine conversions.

I'm 'net ahead' on this 85.   Has zero rust, and barely a ding or two.

they don't have to cost money to own , if yer clever and resourceful.

didn't say which engine or year ..
There have not been many turbo'd waterboxers, pretty sure.  Not the best
engine as a base for significant performance upgrades, like doubling the
hp.  There are far better engines to do that with.
