In Alaska - we always left the diesels running in winter. Shut it off long enough to get cold on a winters day - it might be spring before you could start it again. LOL! Really - diesels were rarely shut down in winter. And on the North Slope at the oil camps - never - all winter. It's a major project to start one up when it's cold. And it gets bloody cold up there. Spent a little time at Umiat - on the north side of the Brooks range on the Slope. It was like minus 50 or so - and in the little cabin the barrel stove was cherry red but there was frost on the heads of the door nails inside the room. Diesels don't do well there if they get a chill!
