Thanks, Stacey!  I will use the angle method.  I was just going to have a
buddy hold the glass up in place firmly while I pull on the rope.  I will
have a decent amount of beer on hand for *after* the work to either
celebrate or commiserate.

Now, this is a Riviera rather than a Westfalia, and they chose to mount the
screen on the outside of the sliding windows by screwing them into the body
panel *through* the window gasket.  I'm sure that is why this window is
leaking and I'm hoping to not find too much rust underneath.  For now, I'm
planning on remounting the same way, after cleaning up and sealing any rust
underneath.  After re-establishing the screw holes in the gasket of the
re-installed glass, would it it be helpful to squeeze some grease into
those four holes to provide a barrier to moisture getting in?
