One reason wood has become less popular is maintenance - wood interiors, and moreso wood exteriors, need regular, time-consuming car. We met a retired couple a few years back who had a wood canal boat that they used in the Rideau Canal and Trent Canal systems here in Ontario each summer. They loved that boat, and it was gorgeous, but the husband remarked they hadn't really used it a lot before retirement, as each spring when they took it out of storage, there was a month's worth of work refinishing the wood before they 'set sail'.
