My '81 air cooled box had knockouts for the heater core nipples.

The OEM core wasn't a direct fit; there was a diverter of sorts that I
deleted and closed cell foam tape was used to secure it from flopping
around. It works fine though. Anyhow.....

Jim: is there a stamped number as per the image I linked to? This
might help narrow down what year heater box(es) you have on hand.
