I didn't follow every post of the thread..
I am wondering if spark plugs have been inspected.
it's not hard to imagine them being wet-fouled.
all it takes is some tired plug wires, some large plug gabs on old plugs..
it cranks, fuel sprays ..plugs don't fire right ..everything gets wet
with fuel the more you crank, etc.
did you try the old 'unflood' with WOT trick ?
with an AFM ..that flapper door still restricts air ..
in a bad case ...you need to undo an air hose or the air boot to get
enough air going in to clean things out.
I helped a 280ZX unflood at the end of a cold day at a ski area like
that once..
man were those guys happy !
might appreciate this. I have a 1970 carbed Mercedes 250 sedan, Ursula.
with stock plugs and wires ..
easily gets plugs not working right ..running on 4 or 5 cyls cold etc.
I put in Subaur red spark plug wires for a Legacy ( used ones even )
and the smaller spark plugs ( 5/8th inch nex size, same 14mm thread and
depth ) for Subaru electronic ignition ..
that set up of plugs and wires ALWAYS works..
even after cold wet sitting for weeks.
Vanagons have strong enough ignition that 'usually' the plugs and wires
work fine ..
but sometimes.......
