first... I never recommend to turn the steering without at least a little forward or aftward movement on any vehicle. even with power steering. it's stressful on the steering parts. so ..'don't do that if you can help it' ...turn the steering with vehicle fully stopped.

What helps the most in my experience with non-PS Vanagons is front tires with tall new tread. when the Wildcat 195/75 R14 LT was available.. and I still have a few with lots of tread..they steer quite nicely without PS.

tire pressure adjustments only help so much.

speaking of... there is aftermarket electric power steering that can be retro-fitted to vanagons.. from the UK I think. Might go on the steering column inside the car. I just saw some guy's post from the UK saying he was very pleased with it. Google's our friend there. :-)
