Neil,
Leaks are easy - a radiator leak will always show itself on the outside. Internal corrosion and lime deposits are tougher. You can get an idea of how bad the lime deposits may be by looking through the inlet & outlet fittings.
Considering how rare some parts are getting I'd suggest taking a hard look at the outside. If everything looks good & straight then take it to your local radiator shop, have them go through it then hang it up somewhere as a spare.
Thanks, Tom Hargrave

Did you try to call & I did not answer? I apologize but I never answer numbers I don’t recognize because I’m tired of sales people trying to sell me life insurance, health insurance, Obama insurance, merchant services, very expensive money and the latest, greatest “guaranteed to make millions” investment.

Subject: Used Radiator Inspection?
Hi all.
Searched archives some but didn't find an obvious answer.
I understood the risk prior to purchase, but got a good deal on some used WBX parts. Seller said the radiator had low KM's. It *appears* to reflect this. A garden hose can test flow (and pressure test for
leaks?) but if I supply pics of this radiator, can anyone take a guess as to whether or not it would be worth installing?
Compared to a radiator I pulled from a 1.9 Vanagon (parts van) images:
https://picasaweb.google.com/musomuso/19WBXRadiatorOpenedUp# the
newer radiator looks WAY better. On a side note, though I'm not expert, on that 1.9 radiator I was surprised to see that the core inlets-outlets weren't obviously clogged.
Thanks!
Neil.
