83 and up Vanagon radiators just fail to remove heat that well eventually. It's a time-depedent thing .. 15 yrs say ..it's due if there are any sginficant cooling system issues.

a used one ..unless you know it's only say 5 miles on it... you just take your chances. if a used one isn't up to the task they are usually not that hard to swap out.

I don't think I'd pay a lot for a used one ..say something like $ 100 .. but for 50 why not give it a try , as long as you have time to gain experience with it prior to a major life adventure trip.
