it depends on how fresh or good the trans is. If it has 150,000+ orignal miles on it ..then yes..rebuild also.

on the other hand ....if things are medium fresh ..say 30,000 on a good rebuild..driven with very high quality gear oil and driven nicely ... normally one would never want to distrub the left-right location and preload ( and pinion gear contact pattern ) of the Ring Gear.. and a determined careful clever person could remove the bell housing.. remove the ring gear and carrier assembly .. put in the locker .. and put it all back together exactly precisely like it was. and do that successfully. Determined careful clever people can do that nicely .. if the trans is not due for a rebuild.

I think there are only two kinds of Vanagon transaxles ( when they are 25+ years old. ) those that have been rebuilt, and those that are due to be rebuilt. that's 2WD .. syncro's ....they can need a trans rebuild as often as every 6 to 8 years sometimes.

that locker ..the basic price sounds great to me. if it works like they claim ....I'd sure like to try one out. and ....does it work in an automatic..? I have one of those that needs a rebuild for sure . That's when to put one in of course...during an 'doing a rebuild trans anyway' .
