This is due to "global gravity change," an increase in gravity here since the '80s holding down the needle.

My guess anyway, and it's effecting my weight too!

I have the same problem and I'm going to break the instrument cover banging on it if I don't get it fixed. This is the real fix: www.overseas-spedometer.com. About $85 plus shipping, and I'll get the 10% over speed error adjusted too.

I've got an 84 Vanagon with a fairly recent Speedo cable. I've had the Speedo needle not move till I knock the face of the pod a few times, more frequently lately. Is there a known fix for this "loose needle" syndrome? Sent from my HTC smartphone on the Now Network from Sprint!
