how many miles on that speedometer Don?

Maybe the drive wheel bushing is worn far enough to allow the pickup wheel to contact it? Slapping the cluster cover jars it loose again?

When I "rebuilt" my '85 speedo, both of these wheels tended to contact. (due to my work) At first, the speedo wouldn't show speed until ~ 15 MPH. It now works fine (though reads slightly high) as the parts have settled in it seems.

FWIW, others have found that installing a bracket to hold the odo shaft from walking out is a decent longer term fix.
