When your van is not in use this fan can and will take down a battery overtime. Many customers have BTDT!

I don't think there's any downside to having the fan kick in early. It makes a bit of noise, sure, and draws a teeny bit of power -- but the ammonia absorption refrigeration system can use any help it can get.
