The speedo needle not moving is due to excessive "sticktion" on the needle pivot. The fix is to go to a clock shop and get some clock oil. For when the input side gets noisy you can also use the clock oil there or I like to use the "super lube" on that input sleeve. I use that as it does not seem to effect the plastic parts.

While there are a number of options for speed and mileage indication, I prefer that the factory gauges at least work somewhat so that they can easily be read and used as designed. I know both the speedo and odometer over read but I still prefer that they at least work along with the fuel and temp gauges. There are a number of folks that can repair these things. I recently had the speedo in my Fox fixed. For ~$70 it now works as it should and I enjoy looking at the dash and having it function.

I've got an 84 Vanagon with a fairly recent Speedo cable. I've had the Speedo needle not move till I knock the face of the pod a few times, more frequently lately. Is there a known fix for this "loose needle" syndrome? Sent from my HTC smartphone on the Now Network from Sprint!
