John, the tach sender wire connects to the negative side of the coil.

There are four wires on the coil, which has two terminals, plus and minus (each one provided with two spade connectors). The plus side carries the 15 circuit coming from the ignition switch, and has another wire that carries the 15 circuit to supply something else in the engine room, forget what.

The minus side carries the driver wire coming from the ECU (or from the ignition driver module on the 1.9l setup), and the tach sender wire.

If you hook the tach wire to the positive side it's guaranteed not to work.
