Key is to always choose good places if you're stopping. Only stop where traction is good or where gravity will help you get going again. Stopping on sand, you will get stuck..Even wet grass, with a bit of incline....from a stop, no go. Preserve your momentum. With a skillful driver a 2wd van can go pretty ok, but they have crappy traction that the good driver can work around. Not at all forgiving for a low traction rookie. Good ground clearance, pretty sturdy.
