Use a short bolt with a 17 mm head, a extra nut run all the way down, trim the excess bolt and weld the nut to the bolt. If you have a welder and want to go to the trouble this works great, but buying the right tool is the way to go.

A little tip, be sure and clean the hole for the tool as it gets full of mud etc, and will "strip" if the nut or even the tool slips. This is important with CV bolts also mud and grease fill the indention setting up a real problem when you strip the wheel end bolts.

Also use caution to not over tighten the transmission plug. Over the years I have found several plugs way to tight. Its a pipe thread with no pressure on it, so with out looking in the Bentley I'll bet the spec is not more than 10 or 15 inch pounds of torque.
