Possibly the lowest cost solution is to find the pieces need from a junker or whatever. Install as much as you can yourself and then get help as needed. Getting the harnesses and stuff would also be helpful. Remember most of the Vanagon AC units were add ons. At one time the kits were even available through the dealer. I purchased and installed the OEM kit on my 84. You will likely also need the larger radiator fan and that harness also. There are some kits available most being under dash. These do get pricey. You can also find one of the Behr under dash units sometimes used in the earlier Vanagons.
