2WD vanagons have great ground clearance. on the level ..when you can go slowly enough ..they can crawl over LOTS.

where you get in trouble is say ....uphill and big bumps...and you would be fine if you could to it at 4 mph .. but ..depending on how steep it is .. especially with a manual trans.. you could get in a situation where you have to go say 15 to 20 mph to have any power for the steepness of the hill.. and if the bumps are a foot tall or worse.. then you are in trouble.

slow crawling on the level is fine though. Steep decents can be an issue too if it's at all bumpy or slippery/rocky.

I'd say you need a few hundred hours of bushwhacking experience to find out what you and your rig and do and what you can't.

there are times when the only smart thing to do is stop, get out, and walk a quarter mile ahead to see if it looks like you could make it through, or up or down something ....and if you can turn around somewhere too.

Most Nat Forest roads are quite decent. Stream crossings can be fun too .

I'm told that the trip to the campsite is somewhat treacherous... What conditions would make this a no go for me? Does anyone have any examples of where my 2 (really 1) wheel drive vanagon can not make it? I thought the off-road capability was high as long as we weren't dealing with climbing rocks and splurging through mud... > > Thanks in advance for your wisdom :-) > > Dave > 85 GL "babybus" > > Sent from my iPad
