Ha, ha! The estimated 3 million gear changes I've made in my lifetime led me to my latest auto Westy. Way too much traffic around here now to constantly be shifting to go from zero to 25 to zero to 50 to zero, etc. constantly. At peak times heading in or out of Seattle (Fridays out, Sundays back in) there can be 60 miles of this.

I test drove an automatic and a manual when I bought my Carat new in 1990. Hated the automatic, bought the manual. When my daughter got a 1990 automatic a few years ago, I loved it. Vanagons have sure changed a lot in 24 years.
