Interesting, I may just have to get one. Reading the FAQs it makes sense, but I think it's main purpose would be to test the oil at every change and if you get a bad reading then send a sample to Blackstone to find out what's going on. Blackstone charges $25 for an analysis and another $20 for a TBN extended life test.

Extended oil changes on a Vanagon are controversial, but with modern synthetics and this device it might make sense. The key measurement is acidity, which indicates additive breakdown, and this device supposedly measures this.

Soon there will be a smartphone app no doubt.

Apparently there's a $43 oil analyzer out now that will test your oil and then rate its usefulness within 1 minute. With lab analysis running almost that much for one sample, one wonders what the savings would be with this tool not only in lab fees, but extended oil use between changes.
