There's a neat invention . called a magnifying glass.

anyone with eyeballs over 35 yrs old say......should have a magnifying glass as part of their office/tools collection. I probably have 10 .

It didn't occur to you to use a magnifying glass ? I couldn't live without them.

cleaning ..oh ...start with an old tooth brush and spray carburetor cleaner.. very low tech, very effective. I do it on old newspaper, sometimes right on the garage floor.

Back to the ole 'LOOK' thing. Evidently some people to not grasp the basic intelligence of LOOKING at the dang thing ?

had it yesteday .. guy sez "I smell burning rubber in the engine area.'

I don't know anything about engines ..what do I do.

I had to tell the guy ............Duh ........you open the engine compartment and LOOK ..with your eyeballs. Before doing that he asks me if he should dive under there and look from

below ? He could not even get that cost benefit ratio that action is higly favorable.. it might not reveal anything .. but the effort involved in looking from underneath is basically nothing.

this guy is also a master at coming up with reasons for not doing something. 'I can't open the engine cover and LOOK in the engine area because I don't know anything about engines." he said.

so ........like if a big hose fell into a v-belt he can't see that ??????? or a dead animal is in there or whatever ? LOOK ....like duh.

This is an example of how people 'block their own process' I call it.

At lot of people think they can't do things evidently. They must not believe in the human ability be self-teaching and self-learning.

you know..figger stuff out !

I've known this day was coming and feel lucky to have made it this far (10+ years). Right now the van ('85 Weekender) is just sitting in the garage. A few years back I bought a "spare" 1.9 from a young man who was selling off his deceased fathers Vanagon collection (Vanagons had finally killed him) He said his dad had told him this engine was the best of all the ones he had and was keeping it to go into his Vanagon someday. Tonight I pulled the right head off that engine and it does appear to be in very good condition, there is just a tiny bit of pitting, and none near the outer sealing edge. I want to get my '85 back on the road ASAP, so my plan is the clean up this head and have it ready to swap out as quickly as possible. My question is, what is the best way to clean it up? I want to get it as clean as possible before installing it on my engine in the van. I've also noticed there does not appear to be any cracks between the valves-well at least that I can see, I wear contact lenses and my up close vision isn't that great, so I'll check it again in the morning with the naked eye before I put my lenses in.
