Assuming it's a manual, park it (cold, no warm up) on a level surface and remove the fill plug on the side (NOT the drain plug) and either oil will run out or not.

In case you don't know where that is: http://volksweb.relitech.com/tech/clutch/transfill.jpg This is the passenger side of the transaxle, and the fill plug is just above a rib so a little difficult to see from below, laying on the ground, so maybe jack that side of the van up. Keep in mind that if you stick your finger in this hole to see just how far down the lube level is, that jacking up that side of the van will lower the leverl. If the level is just below or right at the hole, leave it alone. If it's more than about 1" add a little, maybe 1/4 quart. The Bentley says it should be about 1/2" below the fill hole, but I like filling it up to the hole, not running out onto the side of the case. Note that the shift linkage is missing in the above linked photo, so getting to that fill bolt is not a real clear access, but can be done. I tend to use a hex socket on a short ratchet extension. I also added a BMW bolt to put in that hole, so now I can use a regular open end wrench or regular socket wrench to remove the bolt.
