I don't know the particulars in this specific Alt warning light case..

and..I sure hear and witness a lot of cases where people will Not Even JUST LOOK !! ... like aim their eyeballs at things in the engine compartment .

My own daughter when she was 6 yr old might easily notice a flopping alternator belt is probably not right.

I'll stop ...I have even know vanagon owners to see the two classic symtoms of Alt Light on, and Temp Needle rising . ( classic signs of loosing the alt / water pump belt ) .. not even look at the engine .. and when they finally did ..fail to notice a massively split apart and just 'gone' crankshaft pulley ..on a diesel vanagon.

It never hurts to just look. One doesn't have to be a real technician to see something obvious completely weird looking, which does happen sometimes.

In my perception a lot of people "believe" they can't fix things ..so they don't even look.
