The reference was a metaphor, as in "the carbon fiber look of today is a statement of modernity like the pink and grey paint job or your pink and grey bathroom tiles were back in that day."

It's an icon of the time, with the idea that whatever is up-to-day stylewise will one day look quaint and old-fashioned, even carbon fiber. Kinda like stainless appliances.

Or brown interiors, though they are coming back I hear : )
