Bill,

As an owner of an 84 Westy, since 1987... I've experience it all. When I was trouble shooting engine hick-ups, and changed sensor after sensor, without much improvement. Then, a very good mechanic friend (as I'm just a weekend mechanic), suggested that the wires leading to the sensors and ground points could be causing my issues. I took a good look at the wire feeding a sensor, followed it and noticed small cracks in the insulation. So, I cut the bad section out of the wire, and striped back the insulation.

Wow, the corrosion in the copper was real bad! I put an ohm meter on the wire, and discovered resistance!! So, I replaced the wire, and things started running better. This type of trouble shooting takes a lot of time, but the results are that your ECU, and sensors receive the correct signal and tell the motor what to do.

Not a simple fix, but a good fix!

Good luck with your van and it's 24 year old wires!

Happy Snow Day,

So I had a quick question about my Westy, it sometimes stalls during idle...this has not happened in awhile. I recently had it is the shop (there was a problem with my Hall Sending Unit in the Distributor). Got all that fixed it starts now and seems to run well. But since I have gotten it back I have noticed that it is a little hicuppy (is that a term/) upon start up. I have a new engine that I installed last January and this has not been an issue since then. But it will stumble/hiccup till it gets warmed up. If I put the van in reverse out of a parking spot and when I go to shift to drive, it cuts out. To describe the action -- I put the van in to reverse, I back up, as i shift into drive the van seems to rev and then drop down and then cut. Could there be an adjustment that needs to be made in the idle control? Thanks, Bill 1990 Westy "Big-bot...AKA The Boosh"
