It amazing how much a turbo can quiet an exhaust. It's also amazing the effort that goes into exhaust design. On my motor home the which is also rear engine the muffler and the outlet pipes are firmly attached to the body. The outlet of the turbo directly connects to an approximately 8 inch X 5 inch flex pipe. This pipe is almost slinky like. From there is a fancy shaped pipe the connect to the muffler-cat. This is about 12"dimater and 24" long. This slinky to muffler pipe was original covered in insulation. When the pipe failed the only thing that made we aware was that I could hear the turbo whistling when I stood outside and had somebody rev the engine. Inside I knew nothing. As of now the muffler is the only part of the exhaust that is original after the turbo and slinky. Five inch exhaust can make you appreciate Vanagon exhaust quickly.

Good points. And that's interesting re bolted flanges. I always assumed they were there *only* to help with servicing the exhaust.

So with the TD, the obvious purpose aside (turbo boost), if I were to assume that the turbo dampens exhaust pulses, does this dampening reduce wear and tear on the exhaust system or just reduce exhaust noise?
