South African T3's have rotary controls. Not sure what year they started putting those on.

If you look at a Mk3/A3 Golf/Jetta, you will find they have very similar Bowden cable controls with rotary dials. You may only need to adapt the cable ends. The rotary controls in the Golfs have circular ends which are attached to stud like protrusion. Whereas Vanagons are a dog-leg straight ends.
