Subject: Vanagon Stereo Override?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8

Hi all.

The list server appears to be down and i don't recall this being suggested (but I bet it has).

A recent chat about high powered stereo systems got me thinking. If one is listening to the stereo, can't hear the engine, isn't pay attention to warning lights, if something goes wrong with the engine, (or other parts) excessive engine damage may result.

Thought: connect the coil of an 87- 87a relay to coolant and oil pressure warning systems and relay switch to stereo positive power. As a warning system is activated, it also sends power the relay coil and the switch cuts power to the stereo. The drivers attention is then likely drawn to the instrument cluster. The coolant light and oil pressure switch(es) logic at startup might make the idea moot, but IF this were even close to a good idea......

Would Amp draw of the relay coil draw enough to interfere with proper electrical operation of the OEM warning light/buzzer electronics and cause false alarms?

Not a plug and play idea, yes the driver is responsible for vehicle operation, but I bet the above scenario has happened before.

Too lazy to test....

Neil.
