No need to pull the grease cap. A clamp holding lower portion of cable to frame needs to be loosened. P 90.16 in my Bentley shows details.

I recall removing a cable from a junk yard diesel Vanagon. Cable was quite stuck to grommet. Apply penetrating fluid to speedo cable where it passes through grommet at steering knuckle.
