Hi,

I have one and I'm pretty happy with it. I guess I don't camp in places as windy as Mark does, but I do camp in spots that do get some wind. There is no question that you need poles and guy lines. Only in certified, guaranteed, assured, no wind spots can you deploy sans poles.

I use my home made, three section poles that I made for my MEC guides tarp that I used as an awning for years. The sections are four same length, two short length. I did that so I could mix and match to adjust the guides tarp to spill wind and water. This approach works well with the shady boy.

I don't know if a Catalina awning would fair much better than the shady boy in the winds I have experienced. My friend had his Apollo awning fold back over the roof of his van during a wind event. In that case he should have had guy lines to keep the awning down.

As stated in another message on this subject, an awning is a big sail.
