If only replacing a pair I would put them on the rear and the old rears up front. As they are slightly taller with the resulting increased load capacity they will do well there. Sometimes when a Vanagon is fitted with a larger tire in the rear it may have a tendency to over steer and I have seen them become squirrely at highway speeds. Adjusting the Caster angle should fix this.

I have a lead on Hankook RAO 8 tires (Tire Crazy) for $98 with free shipping. They offer just the 195 r 14 size. The stock size for my van is 185 r 14. I like those RAO 8s for the front, I want some more. My "lazy guy" question is prompted by having poor and frustrating internet access where I'm currently camping, making finding a readable and understandable tire size calculator rather tedious using my new phone, one that still often stumps me.

My current fronts are old Nokian Hakka Cs (185 r14s) that are going quite bald. I have a remote- country homeward journey pending, couple of thousand miles in the deserted West. I really shouldn't try it on these worn fronts, so I'm thinking of having the RAOs , in the available size drop-shipped to a nearby tire service to be mounted before I Ieave.

No full "tire thread" needed...just need a rundown of the consequences of using the RAO 8 tire in 195r 14 on the front of my 84 5sp tin-top as opposed to the 185r 14s I have on there now. TIA..
