That's a nice simple solution, and will definitely help keep some dirt out. The problem with the plastic vent guard is that it doesn't sit flush at the sides or in the center, so a fair amount of unfiltered air will move past. There's a later post that uses wire mesh to more effectively block the intake, and it seems like some combination of the two approaches would be ideal.
