I agree. Since the vast majority of water cooled Vanagons have wasserboxer engines, the odds are overwhelming that if a Vanagon has an engine failure it will have a wasserboxer under the lid. This tends to give the engine a "bad rap." But properly maintained the engine is generally reliable, and even with the cost of one or two head gasket jobs during the engine's lifespan factored in, it's still the most affordable engine alternative. I have never felt the need to upgrade the engine in any of my Vanagons over the years.
