I've replaced the black rings with the engine out. I wouldn't if you're working with the engine installed. I use a dental pick to remove them, as Steve surmised.

With the engine out it's also possible to access the connecting rod bolts using a long wobble extension, and remove the pistons/cylinders that way. Then the groove can be properly cleaned for that o-ring. Of course at that point you'll decide you might as well change the connecting rods/bolts/bearings, and some new piston rings wouldn't hurt...
