Hi Larry. Seems you're right on all counts!

I was thinking it might crack b/c material is pot metal (?)

The idea is to compress the ends, especially the collared end (image):

I just measured a pair of old wiper arms. Hole in each were pretty close to same ID. The ID of hole is tapered of course. Compressing that part of the arm seemed to close the collared end but obviously not the bigger end. It also seems one runs the risk of ovaling the hole at the collared end.
