Don't use steel wool.  It will rust and break down very quicky.  Use foil
instead to shape and mold right over the splines while taking up any slack.
 You can always add one more little piece if it's not enough or get's
loose.  At some point, you will make it worse as the foil can't be
compressed anymore and it will go the other way in regards to "fit".
